Bali Visa on Arrival Cost

If you are budgeting for a trip to Bali, there is one non-negotiable cost you need to include on your spreadsheet. That is the price of a Visa on Arrival (VoA). Australians cannot enter Bali – or any other part of Indonesia – without a valid visa. While there are other visa options for travel to Indonesia, most visitors to Bali make use of the Visa on Arrival program for short tourism-related trips.

This program allows tourists from more than 80 countries – including Australia – to be granted a visa on arrival to Denpasar International Airport in Bali. As long as you meet some basic requirements, this is a relatively easy process – but it does not come for free.

Gili Trawangan is the closest of the Gili Islands to Bali and the most popular of the three. It is easily accessible by boat from Bali and offers some great diving and water sports activities, as well some nice resorts and a spectacular ‘sunset beach’. The island of Nusa Lembongan is the most popular of the Nusa islands and is just a 45-minute fast boat ride from Sanur or Benoa Harbour in Bali. There are some great beaches to explore as well as diving and snorkelling opportunities and quality surfing. Also part of the Nusa islands is Nusa Penida, which can be reached by boat in just 30 minutes from the Bali mainland. Nusa Penida is a popular tourist spot for day trips, boasting some spectacular coastline, beaches and snorkelling.

If you want to stay a little longer than a day you can, but you might need to book in advance given there only a select few accommodation providers on the island. Other nearby islands to Bali include Gili Air, Gili Meno, Nusa Menjangan and Nusa Ceningan.

How much does a trip to Bali cost?

The Visa on Arrival is just one cost you will have to consider if you are planning a trip to the beautiful island of Bali in Indonesia. The total cost of a trip to Bali will really depend on your individual circumstances, interests and tastes. Bali is a suitable holiday destination for people with a wide range of holiday budgets, from backpackers to those willing to fork out for a five-star experience.

During off-peak times, it is possible to find a hotel room in Bali for as little as $20 a night. However, some of the most premium five-star resorts on the island can set you back $1000 or more a night.

Similarly, prices for food and drinks can also greatly vary depending on the establishment. A low-cost meal at a casual local restaurant could be had for as little as $1, but there are also many high-end fine-dining restaurants with meal prices which are similar to those at comparable restaurants in Australia. Transportation costs in Bali are relatively cheap, including airport to hotel transfers.

However, organised tours can be fairly costly. At the end of the day, how much you spend on a holiday to Bali all depends on what you plan to do and how much you are willing to spend.

Travel insurance for Bali

As with any international travel, it is important to make sure you are covered with a suitable travel insurance policy before you make a trip to Bali. Travel insurance is vital because unlike in Australia, you cannot just flash your Medicare card and receive free healthcare in Bali. At a minimum, it is highly recommended that you take out travel insurance that covers you for overseas medical costs and evacuation. However, comprehensive policies which have a range of added inclusions on top of those basics are preferable. Comprehensive travel insurance policies for a trip to Bali can also cover you for things like cancellation costs and lost deposits, additional accommodation and travel expenses and the loss, damage or theft of luggage or personal effects. Travel delays and disruption of journey are other things which are included on some policies. Pricing for overseas travel insurance is dependent on your destination and given Indonesia has cheaper healthcare than some other countries, a travel insurance policy for a trip to Bali can be obtained for a very reasonable price.

A travel insurance policy for a trip to Indonesia is often around half the price of a policy for a trip to the United States for the same period of time. Not having travel insurance for your holiday to Bali could end up costing you a lot more if something does go wrong during your travels.
